Creating a Radiant and Youthful Look
As a bridal makeup artist, my goal is to make every person from Mature brides to Mother of Bride and Groom so they, feel confident, beautiful, and glowing on that special day.
When working with mature skin, it's important to focus on enhancing natural beauty in a way that feels fresh, youthful, and radiant, without the makeup looking heavy or settling into fine lines.
Creating a Glowing Canvas and prepping the Skin:
The key to radiant makeup starts with skin preparation. I begin by thoroughly moisturising the skin to ensure it's well hydrated and plump. A well-prepared canvas not only helps makeup go on smoothly but also prevents it from settling into fine lines.
Choosing the Right Foundation:
I avoid full-coverage or matte foundations as they can make the skin look flat and emphasise texture. Instead, I opt for a lightweight, luminous foundation that provides enough coverage to even out the skin tone while allowing the skin's natural glow to shine through. Tinted moisturisers or light-reflecting foundations are my go-to choices.
Strategic Highlighting:
I use a liquid highlighter to enhance the natural radiance, applying it to the high points of the face—cheekbones, brow bone, and the bridge of the nose. The aim is to create a subtle glow that brings out the youthful vitality of her skin.
Focused Makeup Application:
With mature brides, I believe in enhancing one key feature rather than overloading the face with makeup. If my client has stunning eyes, I make them the focal point, using soft, neutral eyeshadows that complement her eye colour. I avoid heavy eyeliner, opting instead for a soft, smudged liner to add definition without harshness. A couple of coats of volumising mascara and if necessary a few cluster lashes to add a touch of drama to complete the look, making the eyes pop in a way that's both elegant and natural.
If her lips are her standout feature, I choose a lipstick that enhances their fullness. I often opt for creamy, moisturising formulas that give the lips a youthful, plump appearance. A matching lip liner helps define the lips and keeps the lipstick in place throughout the day. Whether she prefers a bold statement lip or a more natural look, the focus is always on making the lips look hydrated and vibrant.3
Choosing Complementary Colours:
I select shades that harmonise with the natural colouring. For example, warm tones like peach and coral can bring warmth to the skin, while cool tones like mauve or rose can add a soft, romantic touch. I always consider the person's eye colour when choosing eyeshadows—bronzes and warm browns for blue eyes, purples and mauves for green eyes, and versatile golds and bronzes for brown eyes.
Subtle Blush:
For a natural flush, I prefer cream or liquid blushes, which blend seamlessly into the skin as powdery formulas that are matte can again look flat and can sit heavy in fine line and wrinkles. I apply blush on the apples of the cheeks and blend upwards, giving the face a lifted appearance.
Setting the Makeup:
In order to make sure the makeup stays fresh throughout the day without appearing heavy, I apply a setting spray that secures everything in position while providing a radiant look. I apply powder with moderation, focusing on the T-zone to manage any shine and maintain a fresh complexion, avoiding excessive powder application on the face as it may feel too heavy, particularly with techniques like baking, which are not suitable for mature skin.
