The importance of hydrating your skin on the run up to your wedding day

My name is Cathryn Kerwin-Rawlinson, and I work as a bridal makeup artist in North Wales and Cheshire. I have expertise in airbrush makeup, and I believe that taking care of your skin before the wedding day is crucial. Your face serves as my canvas, and I consider healthy skin to be the foundation for flawless makeup application on your special day.

One of the most common skin issues I encounter as a bridal makeup artist is dehydration. Whether it's at the trial or when I'm working on bridesmaids who haven't followed my skincare advice, I can spot it almost immediately. And here's the thing: dehydration affects all skin types, whether you're oily or dry. It's a misconception that only dry skin can be dehydrated; you can have oily skin and still be lacking hydration, which will impact how your makeup looks and wears.

Why Dehydrated Skin is a Problem

Dehydrated skin lacks water, and this can lead to uneven, patchy and cakey makeup application, fine lines will appear more prominent, and a lack of that plump, dewy finish that we all want on our wedding day.

Your skin needs hydration to stay plump and smooth, which helps soften fine lines and creates a flawless base for makeup. When skin is well-hydrated, your foundation will sit better on the skin. However, if your skin is severely dehydrated, it will try to pull moisture from the liquid products you apply. What happens in this case is that your skin will draw the moisture out of your foundation, leaving behind just the pigment. This often results in your makeup looking patchy or dry, and it won't last as long throughout the day.

I like to use hyaluronic acid in my hydration and I will come onto my favourite brand later into this blog.

What Does a Hydrator Do?

A good hydrator draws moisture from the atmosphere and locks it into your skin. This is especially important for brides to be because hydrated skin helps makeup go on smoothly, lasts longer, and gives that radiant, glowing look.

I always recommend my brides to start using a hydrator in their daily and nightly skincare routines well before their wedding day. Moisturisers and hydrators are two different things: hydrators add water and help lock it in, while moisturisers nourish the skin. Both are important, but hydration is the foundation of healthy, glowing skin.

My Go-To Hydrator

I swear by one brand only and I have exclusively used this brand since I discovered it in lockdown in 2022 and these are products that I always recommend to my brides:

Hada Labo Super Hydrator

This Japanese brand is available in Superdrug and comes in three variations: the original (white bottle), anti-aging (red bottle), and premium (the white and gold bottle). I personally love the premium version the most because it's incredibly effective at deeply hydrating the skin because it contains 7 hyaluronic acid molecules to penetrate deeply into the skins layers. Hada Labo also offers eye creams, night creams, and even SPFs for the body and face. Their night cream is a staple in my own routine.

Sadly I am not being paid by this brand and I have no doubt over the past 5 years I have sold them countless bottles but the recommendation comes from honesty and a genuine love for a product that really works.

Why Start Now?

If you're getting married or preparing for any big event, start thinking about hydration as part of your skincare routine. Well-hydrated skin holds makeup better, looks more radiant, and helps you achieve that flawless finish you've always dreamed of. So, if you haven't already, consider adding a hydrator into your routine — your skin (and your makeup!) will thank you.
